What is Hajj?

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and is obligatory for all Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey at least once in their lifetime. It occurs during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah (8th-12th) and is the largest annual gathering of people in the world.

وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا

"And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way."

— Quran 3:97

Steps of Hajj

Follow the complete journey through all the essential rituals

Day 1 8th Dhul Hijjah
01

Ihram

Enter the sacred state of Ihram at the designated Miqat. Men wear two white unstitched cloths, symbolizing equality before Allah. Women wear modest clothing. Make the intention (niyyah) for Hajj and recite the Talbiyah.

Talbiyah:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am."

02

Arrival at Mina

Travel to Mina, a tent city about 8km from Makkah. Spend the day in prayer, reflection, and preparation for the Day of Arafah. Perform Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers.

5km from Makkah
Day 2 9th Dhul Hijjah
04

Night at Muzdalifah

After sunset, proceed to Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib and Isha combined, spend the night under the open sky, and collect 49-70 pebbles for the stoning ritual. Depart after Fajr prayer.

Day 3 10th Dhul Hijjah - Eid al-Adha
05

Rami al-Jamarat (Stoning)

Return to Mina and throw seven pebbles at Jamrat al-Aqabah (the largest pillar), commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's rejection of Shaytan's temptations.

Say with each throw:

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ

"In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest"

06

Qurbani (Sacrifice)

Offer an animal sacrifice (sheep, goat, cow, or camel) following the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim. The meat is distributed to the poor, relatives, and kept for oneself.

07

Halq or Taqsir

Men shave their heads (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women cut a fingertip's length of hair. This marks partial release from Ihram restrictions.

08

Tawaf al-Ifadah

Return to Makkah and perform Tawaf around the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise. This is an essential pillar of Hajj and must be completed for Hajj to be valid.

09

Sa'i

Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail. The total distance is approximately 3.15 km.

Days 4-6 11th-13th Dhul Hijjah
10

Days of Tashreeq

Return to Mina and spend these days in worship. Stone all three Jamarat each day (7 pebbles each, starting from the smallest). These are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah.

21 pebbles per day × 3 pillars
11

Tawaf al-Wida (Farewell)

Before leaving Makkah, perform the Farewell Tawaf. This is the final ritual, bidding farewell to the Sacred House. Your Hajj is now complete, and you return home with sins forgiven.

Hajj Mabroor! May Allah accept your pilgrimage.
