What Is Tawaf?

Tawaf (Arabic: طواف) is the ritual act of circumambulating the Holy Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. It is one of the essential rites of both Hajj and Umrah, and one of the most spiritually powerful experiences a Muslim can have.

The word "Tawaf" comes from the Arabic root ط-و-ف, meaning "to go around" or "to encircle." This ritual symbolizes the unity of believers in the worship of One God, as pilgrims move in harmony around the House of Allah.

"And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], 'Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer].'" — Quran 22:26

Types of Tawaf

There are several types of Tawaf performed during Hajj and Umrah:

  • Tawaf al-Qudum (Arrival Tawaf) — Performed upon first entering Masjid al-Haram. It is Sunnah for those performing Hajj.
  • Tawaf al-Umrah — The obligatory Tawaf that is a pillar of Umrah
  • Tawaf al-Ifadah (also called Tawaf al-Ziyarah) — An obligatory pillar of Hajj performed on 10th Dhul Hijjah
  • Tawaf al-Wida (Farewell Tawaf) — Performed before leaving Makkah, obligatory for Hajj pilgrims
  • Tawaf al-Nafl (Voluntary Tawaf) — Can be performed at any time for additional reward

Our virtual Hajj experience covers all types of Tawaf performed during the full pilgrimage.

How Virtual Kaaba Tawaf Works

Pilgrim's Path uses high-resolution 360° imagery of the Mataf (the circumambulation area around the Kaaba) to place you directly in the sacred space. Here's what makes our VR Tawaf experience unique:

  • Realistic perspective — You see the Kaaba from the same angle and distance as a real pilgrim
  • Circuit tracking — The system counts your circuits (1 through 7) and guides your progress
  • Audio duas — Scholar-recited duas play at the appropriate moments for each circuit
  • Landmark annotations — Tap on the Hajar al-Aswad, Maqam Ibrahim, Hijr Ismail, and Multazam to learn about each
  • Day and night modes — Experience Tawaf during daytime and the beautiful nighttime ambiance

Step-by-Step Tawaf Guide

Before Tawaf — Preparation

  1. Be in a state of Wudu (ablution)
  2. For men performing Tawaf al-Qudum or Tawaf al-Umrah: practice Idtiba — expose the right shoulder by placing the Ihram cloth under the right arm
  3. Face the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) at the starting point
  4. Make the intention (Niyyah) for Tawaf

During Tawaf — The Seven Circuits

  1. Begin at the Black Stone — Point toward it, say "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar" and begin walking counter-clockwise
  2. Raml in the first three circuits — Men walk briskly with short steps (during Tawaf al-Qudum or Umrah only)
  3. Walk normally for circuits 4-7
  4. At each pass of the Black Stone — Face it, say "Allahu Akbar," and continue
  5. At the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani) — Touch it if possible, then recite the dua between this corner and the Black Stone
  6. Complete seven full circuits ending at the line of the Black Stone

After Tawaf

  1. Pray two Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (or anywhere in the Haram if crowded)
  2. Drink Zamzam water
  3. Proceed to Sa'i if performing Umrah or Hajj

Duas for Each Circuit of Tawaf

While there are no specific mandatory duas for each circuit (you may make any dua), these are well-known supplications recommended by scholars:

At the Start of Each Circuit (Facing the Black Stone)

"Bismillahi Allahu Akbar. Allahumma imaanan bika, wa tasdeeqan bi kitaabika, wa wafaa'an bi ahdika, wattibaa'an li Sunnati nabiyyika Muhammad ﷺ"
In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, with faith in You, belief in Your Book, fulfillment of Your covenant, and following the Sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone (Every Circuit)

"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhab-an-nar"
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.Quran 2:201

Sacred Landmarks Around the Kaaba

Our VR experience includes interactive hotspots for each major landmark:

  • Al-Hajar al-Aswad (The Black Stone) — Set in the eastern corner of the Kaaba, tradition holds it was brought from Paradise. The starting and ending point of each Tawaf circuit.
  • Maqam Ibrahim — The stone bearing the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), located near the Kaaba. You pray two Rak'ahs here after completing Tawaf.
  • Al-Multazam — The area between the Black Stone and the door of the Kaaba, where duas are especially accepted.
  • Hijr Ismail — The semi-circular wall adjacent to the Kaaba, believed to contain the graves of Ismail (AS) and Hajar.
  • Rukn al-Yamani (Yemeni Corner) — The southwestern corner of the Kaaba, a recommended point to touch during each circuit.
  • Mizab ar-Rahmah (Spout of Mercy) — The golden waterspout on the roof of the Kaaba.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Tawaf

  1. Starting from the wrong point — Always align yourself with the Hajar al-Aswad
  2. Walking clockwise — Tawaf is always counter-clockwise (with the Kaaba on your left)
  3. Pushing toward the Black Stone — Simply point toward it from a distance; there's no obligation to touch or kiss it
  4. Losing count of circuits — Use a counter or our VR system which tracks automatically
  5. Forgetting the two Rak'ahs after — Always pray two Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim after completing Tawaf
  6. Raising your voice excessively — Tawaf is a time for personal, heartfelt dua
