Before Hajj: Preparation & Ihram

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. The rituals of Hajj take place over five days during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah (8th through 12th).

Spiritual Preparation

  • Repent sincerely and seek forgiveness from anyone you may have wronged
  • Settle all debts and obligations
  • Write your will (wasiyyah)
  • Learn the rituals thoroughly — our VR Hajj experience lets you practice step-by-step
  • Memorize essential duas (visit our Duas & Prayers page)

Entering Ihram

Before crossing the Miqat (the designated boundary), you must enter the state of Ihram:

  1. Perform Ghusl (full body wash) or at minimum Wudu
  2. Men: Wear two white, seamless cloths (Izar and Rida). Women: Wear modest clothing covering the body
  3. Make the intention (Niyyah) for Hajj: "Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan"
  4. Begin reciting the Talbiyah continuously
"Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. La shareeka lak."
Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.

Day 1 (8th Dhul Hijjah) — Yawm al-Tarwiyah: Journey to Mina

The first day of Hajj is called Yawm al-Tarwiyah (Day of Quenching Thirst). Pilgrims travel from Makkah to the tent city of Mina, approximately 8 km east of Masjid al-Haram.

What Happens on Day 1

  • Travel to Mina after Fajr prayer
  • Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and the next morning's Fajr in Mina
  • All prayers are shortened (Qasr) but not combined
  • Spend the day in worship, reciting Talbiyah, reading Quran, and making dua
  • Rest and prepare for the most important day — Arafat

Day 2 (9th Dhul Hijjah) — The Day of Arafat

This is the most important day of Hajj — and arguably the most important day in the Islamic calendar. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Hajj is Arafat." Standing at Arafat is the essential pillar without which Hajj is invalid.

What Happens at Arafat

  • After Fajr in Mina, travel to the plains of Arafat (about 14 km from Mina)
  • The standing (Wuquf) begins after the sun passes its zenith (Dhuhr time)
  • Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened (Jam' Taqdeem)
  • Spend the afternoon in intense dua, istighfar, and worship
  • Face the Qiblah, raise your hands, and pour your heart out to Allah
  • The standing continues until sunset — do not leave before Maghrib time
"There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafat." — Sahih Muslim

Night of 9th/10th — Muzdalifah

After sunset at Arafat, pilgrims depart for Muzdalifah, an open plain between Arafat and Mina.

  • Pray Maghrib and Isha combined (Jam' Ta'kheer) upon arrival
  • Spend the night under the open sky in worship and rest
  • Collect 49–70 small pebbles (chickpea-sized) for the Jamarat stoning
  • Pray Fajr as early as possible
  • Make dua at al-Mash'ar al-Haram until just before sunrise, then depart to Mina

Day 3 (10th Dhul Hijjah) — Eid al-Adha: The Busiest Day

The 10th is the most action-packed day of Hajj with four major rituals to complete:

1. Rami al-Jamarat (Stoning)

Stone the largest pillar (Jamarat al-Aqabah) with 7 pebbles, saying "Allahu Akbar" with each throw.

2. Sacrifice (Hady/Qurbani)

An animal sacrifice is performed (or arranged through authorized services). This commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son.

3. Halq or Taqsir (Hair Cutting)

Men shave their heads completely (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women cut a fingertip's length. This symbolizes renewal and marks the beginning of exiting Ihram.

4. Tawaf al-Ifadah

Travel to Masjid al-Haram and perform Tawaf al-Ifadah — the essential Tawaf of Hajj. Follow it with Sa'i if you haven't performed it earlier.

After completing these rituals, most Ihram restrictions are lifted. Return to Mina to spend the night.

Days 4–5 (11th–12th Dhul Hijjah) — Ayyam al-Tashreeq

The Days of Tashreeq are spent in Mina completing the stoning ritual:

Daily Stoning Ritual

  1. After Dhuhr each day, stone the three pillars in order: Small (Jamarat al-Ula), Medium (Jamarat al-Wusta), Large (Jamarat al-Aqabah)
  2. Throw 7 pebbles at each pillar, saying "Allahu Akbar" with each throw
  3. After the Small and Medium pillars, stop to make dua facing the Qiblah
  4. After the Large pillar, leave without stopping for dua

Leaving Mina

Pilgrims may leave Mina on the 12th before sunset (this is called "hastening") or stay until the 13th for additional reward. If the sun sets on the 12th while you're still in Mina, you must stay until the 13th.

Farewell: Tawaf al-Wida

The final act of Hajj is Tawaf al-Wida (Farewell Tawaf) — circumambulating the Kaaba seven times as your last act in Makkah. It is obligatory for all Hajj pilgrims whose next destination is outside the Miqat boundaries.

  • Perform seven circuits of the Kaaba
  • Pray two Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim
  • Drink Zamzam water
  • Make your final duas looking at the Kaaba
  • Leave the Haram walking forward (do not walk backwards)
"Let none of you leave Makkah without performing Tawaf around the House as the last act." — Sahih Muslim
