What Is Umrah?

Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj which has fixed dates. While not obligatory, Umrah is a highly recommended act of worship (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) that holds immense spiritual reward.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"The performance of Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one." — Sahih al-Bukhari

Umrah consists of four main rituals: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq/Taqsir. Our 360° Umrah tour walks you through each step in an immersive, interactive environment.

What Is a 360° Umrah Tour?

A 360° Umrah tour uses panoramic photography and virtual reality to place you inside the sacred sites of Makkah. Unlike flat videos or photos, you can:

  • Look in every direction — Pan around the Haram, look up at the sky, or focus on the Kaaba
  • Navigate between locations — Move from the Miqat to Masjid al-Haram to Safa and Marwa
  • Listen to scholar guidance — Audio narration explains each ritual with appropriate duas
  • Interact with hotspots — Tap on landmarks to learn their significance
  • Practice at your own pace — Pause, rewind, and repeat as many times as you need

This technology is particularly valuable for preparing for your real Umrah trip or for those who cannot travel.

Step 1: Ihram — Entering the Sacred State

Ihram is both the physical garment and the spiritual state of ritual purity you enter before beginning Umrah.

What You'll See in 360°

Our virtual tour begins at the Miqat (the designated boundary point). You'll see the changing areas, the white garments, and hear the Talbiyah recitation echoing around you:

"Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. La shareeka lak."

Key Actions During Ihram

  • Make intention (Niyyah) for Umrah
  • Perform Ghusl (ritual bath) or Wudu
  • Men wear two white unstitched cloths; women wear modest clothing
  • Begin reciting the Talbiyah continuously

Step 2: Tawaf — Circling the Holy Kaaba

Tawaf is the act of circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. It is the most iconic act of Umrah and Hajj. Learn this ritual in depth with our dedicated VR Kaaba Tawaf guide.

The 360° Tawaf Experience

In our virtual environment, you're placed directly in the Mataf (the circumambulation area). You'll see:

  • The black cloth (Kiswah) draped over the Kaaba with its gold embroidery
  • The Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) at the starting point of each circuit
  • Maqam Ibrahim — the station of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
  • The Hijr Ismail — the semi-circular wall near the Kaaba

Each of the seven circuits has specific duas that play as you progress, voiced by scholarly guides.

Step 3: Sa'i — Walking Between Safa and Marwa

Sa'i commemorates the struggle of Hajar (Hagar), wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), as she ran seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa searching for water for her infant son Ismail.

In the 360° tour, you'll walk through the enclosed Sa'i gallery inside Masjid al-Haram. The green-lit section where men are recommended to hasten their pace is clearly visible, and historical context narration plays throughout.

Key Details

  • Begin at Safa, end at Marwa (one direction = one lap, total = 7 laps)
  • Recite duas and supplications during each lap
  • Men walk briskly between the two green markers
  • Make any personal dua you wish — this is a time prayers are answered

Step 4: Halq/Taqsir — Completing Your Umrah

The final ritual of Umrah is cutting or shaving the hair:

  • Halq — Shaving the entire head (for men, preferred)
  • Taqsir — Trimming at least a fingertip's length of hair (required for women)

After this step, you exit the state of Ihram and your Umrah is complete. All the restrictions of Ihram are lifted.
