Why Virtual Preparation Matters

Every year, millions of Muslims travel to Makkah to perform Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage. For many, it is their first time — and the overwhelming scale of Masjid al-Haram, the massive crowds, and the emotional intensity can leave pilgrims confused about what to do next.

Studies show that pilgrims who practise the rituals before travelling report significantly higher spiritual satisfaction and fewer mistakes during their actual Umrah. Virtual reality technology now makes it possible to rehearse every step of Umrah in an immersive, realistic environment from your home.

Whether you are a first-time pilgrim, someone returning after many years, a teacher educating students, or a person who cannot yet travel — virtual Umrah preparation transforms how the Ummah connects with this sacred act of worship.

Traditional vs VR Preparation: What Changes?

Traditional Umrah preparation involves reading books, watching videos, and perhaps attending a seminar. These are valuable but passive — you watch someone else perform the rituals. VR preparation lets you experience them yourself.

Step 1: Practising Ihram Virtually

The state of Ihram marks the beginning of Umrah. It is both a physical and spiritual state with specific rules:

What You Practise in VR

  • Miqat identification — Learn which Miqat boundary applies based on your direction of travel
  • Intention (Niyyah) — Practise the correct wording: "Labbayk Allahumma 'Umratan"
  • Talbiyah — Recite with proper pronunciation along with audio guides
  • Ihram restrictions — Interactive quiz on what is and isn't allowed

Our VR module places you at each of the five major Miqat points — Dhul Hulayfah, Al-Juhfah, Qarn al-Manazil, Yalamlam, and Dhat Irq — so you understand the geography before you arrive.

Step 2: Tawaf Practice in 360°

Tawaf is perhaps the ritual that benefits most from VR preparation. In real life, the Mataf (Tawaf area) is vast and crowded. Knowing exactly where to start, which direction to walk, and where key landmarks are gives you enormous confidence.

What the VR Experience Teaches

  • Starting point — The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) line, with the green light marker
  • Counter-clockwise direction — The Kaaba stays on your left at all times
  • Idtiba' — Exposing the right shoulder (men only, during Umrah Tawaf)
  • Raml — Walking briskly in the first three circuits (men only)
  • Duas at each circuit — Hear and repeat the recommended supplications
  • Landmarks — Identify the Yemeni Corner, Hijr Ismail, Maqam Ibrahim, and Zamzam well

Step 3: Sa'i Between Safa & Marwah

After Tawaf, pilgrims walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail (AS).

VR Sa'i Preparation Covers

  • Starting at Safa — Face the Kaaba, raise hands, and make dua
  • The green-lit section — Men walk briskly between the two green markers
  • Counting laps correctly — Safa to Marwah is 1; Marwah back to Safa is 2 (total 7, ending at Marwah)
  • Duas during Sa'i — No fixed dua required, but recommended ones provided
  • The air-conditioned corridor — Navigate the multi-level Mas'a (Sa'i hall) layout
"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'Umrah — there is no blame upon him for walking between them." — Quran 2:158

Step 4: Halq/Taqsir — Completing Umrah

The final step of Umrah is cutting the hair:

  • Halq — Shaving the entire head (men). This has greater reward.
  • Taqsir — Trimming hair by at least a fingertip's length (men and women)

After this, all Ihram restrictions are lifted. Your Umrah is complete, Alhamdulillah!

Our VR walkthrough takes you through the entire sequence, ending with a congratulatory completion screen and a spiritual reflection moment.

Essential Duas to Learn Before You Go

Don't wait until you're in front of the Kaaba to scramble for duas. These are the key supplications to memorise — all available in our Duas & Prayers library:

  1. Talbiyah — Recited continuously from Ihram until the start of Tawaf
  2. Dua at the Black Stone — "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar"
  3. Dua between Yemeni Corner and Black Stone — "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhab an-nar"
  4. Dua at Safa and Marwah — Starting with "Innassafa wal-marwata min sha'a'irillah..."
  5. General personal duas — In any language, asking Allah for what you need
