"And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass." — Quran 22:27
Entering the Sacred State

How to Tie Your Ihram

Before beginning Hajj, every pilgrim must enter the state of Ihram — a state of spiritual purity and intention.

Ihram Guide

Ihram for Men

  1. 1
Perform Ghusl (Full Ablution) Take a full ritual bath with the intention of entering Ihram. Trim your nails and remove unwanted hair before this.
  2. 2
Wrap the Izar (Lower Garment) Take the larger white cloth and wrap it around your waist, covering from the navel to below the knees. Tuck or secure with a belt — no pins or stitching.
  3. 3
Drape the Rida (Upper Garment) Place the second white cloth over your left shoulder, bringing it under your right arm. The right shoulder is initially covered, but exposed during Tawaf (Idtiba').
  4. 4
Wear Sandals Wear open sandals that do not cover the ankles or the top of the feet. No socks, shoes, or closed footwear.
  5. 5
Make Your Niyyah (Intention) At the Miqat, declare your intention for Hajj: "Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan" — and begin reciting the Talbiyah.
The Talbiyah
"Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. La shareeka lak."
"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner."
